Dear fellow installer – we are vinyl graphics installation Guru’s in the Great Toronto Area hence would like to share with you some guidelines to avoid post-installation problems that may appear judging by harsh Toronto’s winter and summer (if there is any 🙂 ). You need to have a careful consideration of the region’s variable weather conditions to ensure the graphics adhere properly and last as long as possible.
So, here are some specifics to keep in mind:
Temperature
Ideal Temperature Range:
- Vinyl graphics should be installed when temperatures are between 10°C (50°F) and 32°C (90°F). This range ensures the adhesive works effectively.
- Avoid installation in extremely cold or hot temperatures as it can affect the adhesive properties and make the vinyl less pliable.
Seasonal Considerations:
- Spring and Fall: These seasons typically provide the most suitable conditions with moderate temperatures and lower humidity.
- Winter: Installation is challenging due to low temperatures. If necessary, installation indoors or using heat lamps to warm the surface can help.
- Summer: High temperatures can cause the vinyl to stretch and become difficult to handle. Install early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid peak heat.
Humidity
- High humidity levels can affect the adhesive‘s performance. Aim to install vinyl graphics when the relative humidity is between 30% and 70%. Excessive moisture can prevent the adhesive from sticking properly.
Surface Preparation
- Clean Surface: Ensure the surface is thoroughly cleaned and free of dust, dirt, grease, and other contaminants. Use isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth for best results.
- Dry Surface: Make sure the surface is completely dry before applying the vinyl. Any moisture can hinder the adhesive’s effectiveness.
Wind
- Avoid installing vinyl graphics on very windy days. Wind can make it difficult to handle the vinyl and apply it smoothly without wrinkles or bubbles.
Curing Time
- After installation, allow adequate time for the adhesive to cure. This can take 24-48 hours, depending on the environmental conditions. During this time, avoid exposing the graphics to extreme weather or washing.
Maintenance Post-Installation
- After installation, regularly clean the vinyl graphics with mild soap and water. Avoid high-pressure washing and harsh chemicals which can damage the vinyl.
Special Considerations for Vehicles
If applying vinyl to vehicles, ensure they are parked indoors or in a sheltered area during installation and curing time to avoid direct exposure to weather elements. For vehicle wraps there are additional specific considerations due to the unique challenges posed by the city’s climate and road conditions:
Surface Preparation and Imperfections:Â thorough cleaning a.k.a. before applying a car wrap, the vehicle should be thoroughly cleaned and free of wax, dirt, and other contaminants. Use a degreaser and isopropyl alcohol to ensure the surface is clean. Repair any dents, scratches, or rust spots, as these imperfections can show through the wrap and affect adhesion.
For best results, install the wrap in a controlled environment where the temperature is within the ideal range (20°C to 25°C or 68°F to 77°F). This ensures the vinyl remains pliable and the adhesive works effectively.
Use heat guns to help conform the vinyl to complex curves and to activate the adhesive. Be careful not to overheat, as this can cause the vinyl to stretch or warp. After the wrap is applied, post-heating (especially edges and corners) is crucial to activate the adhesive and ensure a strong bond. Apply edge sealant to prevent the edges of the wrap from lifting, especially in areas exposed to high wind or frequent contact. Avoid using traditional waxes or sealants on wrapped surfaces. Instead, use products specifically designed for vinyl wraps to protect the finish and prolong its life.

To summarize: by adhering to these guidelines, vinyl graphics and wraps installed in Toronto can achieve optimal adhesion and longevity, despite the city’s varied weather conditions. Please contact us for any of your vinyl installation needs.
