In the previous post we wrote that professional vinyl installation tools are MUST to have to ensure a professional finish and durability for vinyl graphics installations and described different types of squeegees and heat guns. Below our recommendations for the other tool types:

Utility knife for vinyl cutsUtility Knife:

Purpose: designed for specific tasks within the vinyl installation process such as trimming and cutting vinyl with precision; having a variety of knive types ensures that installers can handle different types of cuts and achieve a professional finish
Types: professional vinyl graphics installers typically use several types of utility knives from popular brands such as Olfa or X-Acto.

  • Standard Utility Knife: This is a general-purpose knife with a retractable blade. It is used for cutting larger pieces of vinyl and trimming around edges.
  • Precision Knife (X-Acto Knife): This knife has a small, sharp blade that is ideal for detailed work, such as cutting intricate shapes or making precise cuts in vinyl.
  • Snap-Off Blade Knife: This type of knife has a segmented blade that can be snapped off to provide a fresh, sharp edge. It is useful for extended use since the blade can be refreshed quickly.
  • Safety Knife: Featuring a blade that retracts automatically when not in use, safety knives help reduce the risk of injury. These are beneficial for installers who prioritize safety while working.
  • Hook Blade Knife: This knife has a curved blade that is useful for cutting through vinyl without damaging the underlying surface. It’s often used for cutting through backing paper or making clean cuts on the material.
  • Scalpels: These are used for extremely precise cutting tasks and are often employed when the highest level of detail is required.

Avery Dennison gel application fluidApplication Fluid:

Purpose: we are using various types of application fluids to assist with the installation process; these fluids help in positioning the vinyl correctly before it adheres permanently.
Types: each type of application fluid has its own advantages, and the choice often depends on the specific requirements of the vinyl installation, such as the type of vinyl, the surface it is being applied to, and the environmental conditions.

  • Water and Soap Solution: this is a DIY application fluid made by mixing water with a few drops of liquid dish soap. It provides a temporary slip, allowing us, as professional graphics installers, to reposition the vinyl before it sticks firmly.
  • Commercial Application Fluids: these are specially formulated fluids available in the market designed to provide optimal slip and tack for vinyl application; they often come with added benefits such as preventing bubbles and enhancing adhesive performance. We used to use fluids from RapidTac, Big Squeegee Slip Solution, and Avery Dennison‘s Application Fluid.
  • Alcohol-Based Solutions: sometimes we are using a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water; the alcohol helps the solution evaporate quickly, providing a short working time which is useful for certain types of vinyl.
  • Gel Application Fluids: these are thicker than liquid solutions and provide a longer working time; the gel consistency helps in controlling the vinyl’s placement better, especially on vertical surfaces or large graphics; GelTac is one of manufacturers that produce such as fluid.

Standard tape measure for vinyl installationsTape Measure and Ruler:

Purpose: we are using a variety of measuring tools to ensure precision and accuracy during the installation process.
Types: Flexible tape measures for curves and rigid rulers for straight lines.

  • Standard Tape Measure: a retractable tape measure with measurements in both inches and centimeters; used for general measuring tasks, such as determining the size of the surface area and cutting vinyl to the correct dimensions.
  • Digital Tape Measure: this one provides digital readouts of measurements, which can be more accurate and easier to read than traditional tape measures.
  • Long Tape Measure: often used for our larger projects, such as graphics installations of walls and murals judging that these can measure longer distances than standard tape measures, sometimes up to 100 feet or more.
  • Steel Ruler: a durable, straight-edged ruler typically available in various lengths (6 inches, 12 inches, 24 inches); it’s used for precise, straight cuts and measurements.
  • Flexible Ruler: made of flexible materials such as plastic or vinyl, these rulers can conform to curved surfaces, making them useful for measuring and cutting on irregular shapes.
  • T-Square: this tool helps ensure that horizontal cuts are perfectly straight and perpendicular to the edge of the vinyl; it’s especially useful for aligning and cutting large graphics.
  • Cutting Mat with Grid: often used in conjunction with a rotary cutter or precision knife, cutting mats have a grid that helps with accurate measuring and cutting; they also protect the work surface.
  • Laser Measure: for high precision and ease of measuring long distances; it provides accurate digital measurements quickly, which is particularly useful for large-scale projects.
  • Combination Square: this tool can measure angles and verify the accuracy of right angles, helping ensure that cuts and applications are properly aligned.
  • Straight Edge Ruler: typically longer than standard rulers, these are used to guide cutting tools for long, straight cuts.
