One of V. Creative Graphics services is an installation of vinyl graphics and wraps on airplanes. We previously discussed main requirements for this installation type and now, judging by numerous requests, we decided to provide more details and required equipment to do these types of projects.
The several unique challenges for installers are presenting by application of vinyl graphics to curved airplane surfaces, when you must take in account the following:
- Airplanes have complex, curved surfaces which can make the application of vinyl graphics more difficult. The vinyl needs to be carefully applied to conform to these curves without causing wrinkles or bubbles.
- The airplane surface must be thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt, grease, and other contaminants. This often involves using specialized aviation-approved cleaning solutions.
- High-quality, aviation-grade vinyl designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, UV exposure, and high speeds should be used. The adhesive must be strong enough to withstand the aerodynamic forces but also allow for eventual removal without damaging the airplane’s paint.
- Vinyl graphics work better on smooth, fiberglass finishes. Surface rivets and screw heads create added complexity and challenges during the application process.
There are specific tools and techniques used by us to handle curved surfaces during the vinyl application process. Here are some of them:
- Heat Gun or Hair Dryer: we used these tools can be used to heat the vinyl, making it more flexible and easier to apply to curved surfaces. Always wear protective eyewear, insulated gloves, and clothing made from natural fibers. Avoid synthetic materials, as they may melt when exposed to high temperatures. Heat guns should be held at an angle of approximately 45 degrees from the work and never kept in one place for more than a few seconds. Always use a suitable respirator face mask.
- Squeegee: a squeegee or a similar tool is used to smooth out the vinyl and remove any air bubbles.
- Knife or Cutter: a precision knife or cutter is used to trim the excess vinyl.
- Application Tape: this is used to transfer the cut vinyl graphic to the surface.
- Primer: a primer can be used to enhance the bond between the vinyl and the surface.
Here are some steps and hacks for applying vinyl to curved surfaces:
- Start by cleaning and drying the surface thoroughly. Remove any dirt, dust, or grease using a mild cleaning solution or isopropyl alcohol.
- Mark the desired placement of the sticker on the curved surface using masking tape or a pencil.
- Apply the primer evenly across the surface where the vinyl will be installed. Be sure to cover all areas, including edges and corners, to ensure maximum adhesion.
- Allow the primer to dry completely before applying the vinyl. The drying time can vary depending on the specific product and environmental conditions. It’s best to apply vinyl graphic products when the air and application temperatures are above 50°F and below 100°F (above 10°C and below 38°C).
- Apply the sticker from the center outwards, smoothing it with a squeegee.
- For complex curves, heat the vinyl to make it more flexible, then stretch and mold it to fit the curve.
- Once the vinyl is applied, go over it with a squeegee again to ensure it’s fully adhered and to remove any remaining air bubbles.
The application of vinyl to curved surfaces requires a high level of skill and precision. If not done correctly, it can lead to peeling, lifting, or damage to the underlying paint an d could even cause the accident during the flight. These challenges make it important to work with experienced professionals, like us, who can demonstrate significant expertise when applying vinyl graphics to airplanes. We, professional vinyl graphics and wraps installers at V. Creative Graphics, have the necessary skills and knowledge to ensure the graphics are applied correctly and last for a long time.
