Tinted window graphics installationIn our previous post, we shared detailed insights about Fasara window graphics, covering the materials used, installation procedures, and the advantages of installing Fasara films. Today, we shift our focus to Tinted window films, which are thin layers of polyester or other materials applied to windows to mitigate heat, glare, and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. We installed these films in residential and commercial buildings, as well as in vehicles. Here’s an in-depth look at tinted window films, including their materials, various types, benefits, and installation details.

Materials

  • Dyed Films are made by applying a dye to a polyester film. They are cost-effective, non-reflective in appearance, and reduce glare. Potential disadvantages are that they may fade over time and be less effective at heat rejection compared to other types.
  • Metalized Films consist of layers of metal (aluminum, nickel, or copper) that are embedded in the film. Films are superior in heat rejection, good for privacy, and increase glass strength. Disadvantages are that they can interfere with electronic signals and have a reflective appearance.
  • Carbon Films contain carbon particles embedded in the film. They have high heat rejection, are fade-resistant, non-reflective, and have no interference with electronics but are more expensive than dyed films.
  • Ceramic Films are made using nano-ceramic technology, incorporating ceramic particles, having excellent heat rejection, non-reflective, block UV rays, do not interfere with electronics, and are highly durable but their cost is much higher.
  • Hybrid Films are a combination of dyed and metalized films, having a balance between cost, performance, and appearance. Films have moderate heat rejection and glare reduction but may still have some signal interference and reflectivity.
  • Crystalline Films are created with advanced multilayer optical film technology, they have high transparency, superior UV and heat rejection, and maintain the appearance of clear glass but are costly with limited availability.

Benefits

  • Enhanced Privacy and Security: Tinted window graphics make it difficult for outsiders to see inside, providing a sense of privacy for occupants. This is particularly beneficial in both residential and commercial settings. By obscuring the view, they can deter potential break-ins as the interior contents are not easily visible.
  • Improved Aesthetics: Tinted window graphics can be customized with various designs, logos, and patterns, enhancing the visual appeal of buildings and vehicles. For commercial properties, they contribute to a professional and cohesive look, reinforcing brand identity.
  • Heat and Glare Reduction: These films reduce the amount of solar heat entering through the windows, helping to maintain a cooler interior environment. This is particularly useful in hot climates such as summertime in Toronto. Films minimize glare from the sun, improving comfort and visibility inside vehicles and buildings, and reducing eye strain for occupants.
  • UV Protection: Tinted window graphics can block up to 99% of harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, protecting occupants from potential skin damage and reducing the risk of fading and deterioration of interior furnishings.
  • Energy Efficiency: By maintaining a cooler interior, they reduce the need for air conditioning, leading to lower energy bills and a more environmentally friendly building or vehicle. In addition to heat rejection, some tinted films provide additional insulation, helping to retain heat during colder months and further reducing energy costs.
  • Safety Enhancement: Tinted window graphics can increase the strength of the glass, holding shattered pieces together in the event of an impact. This reduces the risk of injury from flying glass shards. In areas prone to strong winds, the additional strength provided by these films can be a significant safety benefit.
  • Protection of Interiors: By blocking UV rays and reducing heat, tinted window graphics help protect interior furnishings, such as furniture, carpets, and artwork, from fading and deterioration. In automotive applications, films protect the car’s interior, including seats and dashboards, from sun damage.
  • Versatility and Adaptability: Tinted window graphics can be applied to various settings, including residential homes, commercial buildings, and vehicles, providing a versatile solution for different privacy and aesthetic needs. We, installers at V. Creative Graphics, mostly install this type of graphics at commercial properties, and in terms of installation duration, flexibility with both temporary and permanent options suits different requirements.
  • Cost-Effective Advertising: For businesses, tinted window graphics on company vehicles provide an opportunity for mobile advertising, reaching a broader audience. In commercial buildings, we install them as promotional graphics on storefronts, drawing attention to sales, events, or branding.
  • Enhanced Comfort: By reducing heat, glare, and UV exposure, tinted window graphics create a more comfortable and pleasant environment for occupants, whether in a vehicle or building. The reduction of glare significantly improves visual comfort, making it easier to work, read, or drive without straining the eyes.

Tinted Window Graphics Installation

To start, you will need some type of tinted window film. Choose a high-quality film suitable for your specific application. You will also need an application solution, such as a mix of water and a few drops of dish soap in a spray bottle, a squeegee for smoothing the film and removing air bubbles, a utility knife for trimming excess film, a lint-free cloth for cleaning the windows before application, and a heat gun or hair dryer to help the film conform to curved surfaces and remove any remaining moisture. Preparation is a very important step before actual application, so thoroughly clean the windows with a lint-free cloth and a suitable glass cleaner. Ensure there is no dirt, dust, or grease on the surface. Measure the window dimensions and cut the film slightly larger than the window to allow for trimming. After all the cleaning, you are ready for the actual installation – below are the steps on how to do that:

We generously spray the application solution on the window. This helps to position the film correctly and prevents it from sticking too early. After that, we remove the backing from the film and apply it to the wet window, starting from the top and working all the way down, positioning the film correctly on the window. We use the squeegee to smooth the film from the center outward, removing air bubbles and excess solution, and keep the surface of the film wet to avoid scratching. The utility knife is then used to carefully trim the excess film around the edges of the window. We use the squeegee again to ensure the film is completely smooth and free of bubbles. Lastly, a heat gun or hair dryer on a low setting is used to gently warm the film, which helps it conform to the window and speeds up the drying process.

Tinted Window Graphics Maintenance

We allow the film to fully adhere to the window for at least a week before cleaning. A mild, non-abrasive glass cleaner and a soft, lint-free cloth or sponge is the perfect solution to clean the graphics. We always avoid ammonia-based cleaners as they can damage the film. After cleaning, we wipe the window graphics gently to avoid scratching or peeling the film and use a soft cloth to dry the window. Periodic inspection of the project is required to check for any signs of bubbling, peeling, or damage. If small bubbles appear, we use a pin to puncture them and then smooth the film with a squeegee.

In cases where the customer has signed a maintenance contract with us and has an excess of tinted film materials, we’ll repair small tears or damages with a patch of matching film by cleaning the area, cutting a patch slightly larger than the damaged area, and applying it using the same installation process. If the film is significantly damaged or worn out, we advise removing it completely and installing a new film.
