In our previous posts we talk about new products from 3M and Avery Dennison that are kind of a bold new standard in vinyl film wraps. Vinyl security films, that we’ll describe below, are taking some part of our installation so details about them are important to installers.
Vinyl security films are designed to enhance the safety and security of glass windows and doors. Films are made from a durable vinyl material and are purposed to protect windows from breaking due to burglaries, accidental damage, strong winds or even storms. Products like the 3M™ Safety and Security Window Film Safety Series are designed to increase security and provide added protection against smash and grab burglaries. It is a line of clear, single-layer polyester films to enhance the security and safety of glass windows and doors; films work by holding broken glass in place, which helps prevent shards from causing injury or further damage in case of breakage. In some areas where natural disasters came as the weather “advantages” films are particularly useful. Last, but not least, these films are a popular measure to enhance window security and can be quite effective in preventing break-ins hence lots of our clients are having them installed on storefronts and store windows. here are some of their benefits:
- Window security films are engineered to be tear-resistant and strengthen glass, making it more difficult for burglars to penetrate the windows. This added layer of protection can deter intruders, as it requires more effort and noise to break through, increasing the chance of detection.
- Most burglars are opportunistic and look for easy targets. Store windows, especially at small commercial plazas, are the second most common entry point for burglars after doors. Security films can make windows less vulnerable by reinforcing them against forced entry.
- By having ability to preventing break-ins, these films also offer UV protection and can protect against flying glass during natural disasters and accidentals.
- While window films can be effective in many cases by providing protection against vandalism, and other human-caused damages, we recommended to use them in conjunction with other security measures, at least some alarm systems and video cameras where they are applicable.
There are detailed step of how we install window security films in commercial settings:
Preparation
Clean the glass to remove all dust, dirt, grease, and any other contaminants. One of the most important steps to ensure a successful installation. You should use a mild detergent solution or a specific window film application solution and, to ensure the glass is spotless, use razor blades and squeegees. Measure the dimensions of the glass surface accurately – small measuring mistake will take you back to the film ordering process. Must: cut the film slightly larger than the glass size to allow for adjustments during installation.
Application
Spray the glass surface with a soapy water solution so you may positioning the film correctly, shift by sides if necessary hence and preventing it from sticking immediately. Peel off the backing liner from the film, exposing the adhesive side and spray this side with the soapy water solution so it will not sticking to the glass prematurely. Finally – carefully position the film on the wet glass surface. You have to ensure that there are no large bubbles or wrinkles and adjusting the film as needed. Remove the water and air bubbles from under the film with professional squeegee by starting from the center and work towards the edges to push out all the water and air. Trapped moisture should be totally gone to avoid bubbles and improper adhesion.
Finishing
After proper film positioning and most of the water is removed, trim the excess film using a sharp utility knife. By leaving 1/16 inch gap between the film and the window frame will allow for expansion before final squeegeeing that ensure all edges are properly sealed and no moisture remains. After that just use a lint-free cloth to wipe away any excess water around the edges. Allow the film to cure for some time that can vary depending on the type of film and environmental conditions. From our experience in the Great Toronto Area cure time can take from a few days to a few weeks. And – please ask customer AVOID cleaning the film during the curing period to ensure proper adhesion!
