Wall Graphics Installation at the Toronto Pearson International Airport

2025-07-06T20:38:46-04:00

Project: wall graphics installation at the oyster bar (Toronto Pearson International Airport location)

Materials: 3M

Toronto Pearson International Airport logoThe bustling environment of Toronto Pearson International Airport presented a unique challenge when V. Creative Graphics was commissioned to install custom wall graphics at the airport’s popular oyster bar. This high-traffic dining establishment required a solution that would not only enhance the visual appeal of the space but also withstand the constant flow of travelers and the demanding conditions of an airport environment.

Materials and Specifications

The V. Creative Graphics team selected premium 3M vinyl materials specifically engineered for commercial applications:

  1. 3M IJ180mC-114 Controltac Graphic Film was chosen as the primary medium for its exceptional conformability and repositioning capabilities. This cast vinyl offers superior durability and a professional matte finish that reduces glare under the airport’s bright lighting conditions.
  2. 3M 8518 Overlam provided the protective topcoat, ensuring the graphics would resist scratches, UV exposure, and the frequent cleaning required in a food service environment.

Pre-Installation Planning

Site Assessment – before beginning the installation, the V. Creative Graphics team conducted a thorough assessment of the oyster bar’s interior walls. Key factors evaluated included:

  • Surface Conditions – the existing painted drywall surfaces were examined for texture, cleanliness, and any imperfections that might affect adhesion.
  • Environmental Factors – airport ventilation systems, temperature fluctuations, and humidity levels were documented to ensure optimal installation conditions.
  • Traffic Flow – installation timing was carefully planned to minimize disruption to the restaurant’s operations while ensuring adequate workspace for the installation crew.

Measurement and Layout –  precise measurements were taken using laser measuring tools to ensure perfect alignment. The team created detailed installation drawings that mapped out each graphic panel’s position, accounting for:

  • Electrical outlets and switches
  • Architectural features such as columns and trim
  • Sight lines from various seating areas
  • Maintenance access points

Installation Process

Surface preparation – the installation began with meticulous surface preparation, a critical step that directly impacts the longevity of the graphics:

  • Cleaning protocol – all wall surfaces were thoroughly cleaned using 3M Surface Cleaner to remove dust, grease, and any contaminants that could compromise adhesion.
  • Primer application – where necessary, 3M Primer 94 was applied to ensure optimal bonding, particularly around edges and corners where stress concentrations might occur.

Installation Technique

Panel positioning – using the wet application method, the team began with the largest central panels, working outward to maintain proper registration. The 3M Controltac adhesive allowed for repositioning during the initial placement phase.

Squeegee application – professional-grade squeegees were used with overlapping strokes to ensure complete adhesion and eliminate air bubbles. The team worked systematically from the center outward, maintaining consistent pressure.

Edge sealing – all edges were carefully sealed using appropriate techniques to prevent lifting, particularly important in the high-traffic airport environment.

Quality Control Measures

Throughout the installation process, the V. Creative Graphics team implemented rigorous quality control:

  • Bubble detection – each panel was inspected for air bubbles using specialized lighting techniques that revealed any imperfections.
  • Adhesion testing – edge adhesion was tested using controlled lifting forces to ensure proper bonding.
  • Color matching – adjacent panels were carefully aligned to ensure seamless color transitions and pattern continuity.

Technical Challenges and Solutions

High-Traffic environment – the airport location presented unique challenges that required innovative solutions:

  • Accelerated installation schedule – working during off-peak hours, the team completed sections of the installation in phases to minimize disruption to restaurant operations.
  • Dust control – airport environments generate significant dust from constant foot traffic. The team used temporary barriers and frequent cleaning to maintain optimal installation conditions.

Complex geometry – the oyster bar’s architectural features required specialized techniques for corner applications where inside and outside corners were executed using proper overlap techniques and trimming to prevent lifting and ensure durability.

Post-Installation Care and Maintenance

Immediate post-installation – following completion, the graphics underwent a 24-hour curing period during which the 3M adhesive reached its full bond strength. The area was monitored for any signs of edge lifting or bubble formation.

Results and Performance

Visual impact – the installation transformed the oyster bar’s interior, creating an immersive dining experience that transported passengers from the busy airport environment to an elegant coastal setting. The graphics successfully:

  • Enhanced the restaurant’s brand identity
  • Improved wayfinding for airport travelers
  • Created Instagram-worthy photo opportunities that increased social media engagement
  • Elevated the overall dining experience

Industry Best Practices Demonstrated

Installation precision – the flawless execution of the installation reflected years of experience and attention to detail. Key success factors included:

  • Comprehensive pre-installation planning
  • Appropriate tool selection and technique application
  • Rigorous quality control throughout the process

Client Communication

Throughout the project, V. Creative Graphics maintained excellent communication with airport management, ensuring minimal disruption to operations while delivering exceptional results on schedule.

The successful installation of wall graphics at Toronto Pearson International Airport’s oyster bar demonstrates the importance of professional expertise in commercial graphic applications. The V. Creative Graphics team’s attention to detail resulted in a transformation that enhanced both the visual appeal and commercial success of the restaurant.

Project: Team Raptors wall graphics ad installed at the Toronto Pearson International Airport

Materials: 3M bubble free vinyl

toronto raptors logo“We the North” is the iconic slogan of the Toronto Raptors, the only NBA team based outside the U.S., representing Toronto, Canada. Introduced in 2014 during a rebranding effort, the phrase was crafted to strengthen Canadian pride and unify fans nationwide, highlighting the team’s distinctive position as the league’s sole Canadian franchise. The slogan reinforces the Raptors’ identity as both a national symbol and an underdog in a predominantly American league.

Key Details:

Origin: created by Toronto branding agency Sid Lee, the campaign sought to redefine the Raptors as Canada’s team.

Purpose: the slogan was more than a rallying cry—it aimed to expand the team’s fanbase beyond Toronto, fostering nationwide support while embracing the Raptors’ unique status in the NBA.

Impact: “We the North” quickly became a cultural phenomenon, uniting fans and elevating the Raptors into a source of Canadian pride. Its influence extended beyond basketball, evolving into a broader statement of resilience and identity.

National Appeal: though rooted in Toronto, the slogan was designed to resonate across Canada, reinforcing the team’s role as a unifying force and its underdog spirit in the NBA.

Modular Wall Systems: A Flexible Solution for Temporary Graphics Displays

In dynamic settings such as airports the ability to quickly install and refresh branded graphics is crucial. Modular wall systems have emerged as a top choice for businesses seeking adaptable, high-quality display surfaces that can be easily reconfigured or moved. For our installation the modular system consists of freestanding panels that arranged to form enclosed spaces. Unlike permanent structures, modular walls are lightweight, reusable, and simple to assemble or disassemble. They are made from durable materials like aluminum frames with laminated surface, ensuring longevity while maintaining a sleek, modern look.

A key benefit of modular walls is their rapid setup and teardown, significantly reducing the time and labor compared to traditional construction. Panels often connect with minimal tools, cutting costs and minimizing operational downtime. The smooth, seamless surfaces are perfect for vinyl graphics that we installed on them. Designed for adaptability, modular systems allow for effortless reconfiguration when layouts or display sizes change—ideal for “something is landing soon” ads. Their reusability also makes them an eco-friendly alternative to disposable materials, as graphics can be swapped out without replacing the entire structure.

To all who’s not familiar with purpose of modular systems – modular walls are widely used in retail for pop-up shops, seasonal displays, and store redesigns. They also excel at trade shows as portable booth backdrops and in corporate settings for temporary partitions during product launches or branding initiatives. Airports and transit hubs leverage them for short-term ads and directional signage.

Installing graphics on modular walls was a straightforward process:

  1. Site assessment – we measure the space and plan the layout.
  2. Assembly – erect and level the panels.
  3. Surface prep – clean and prime for optimal adhesion.
  4. Graphics application – apply vinyl using specialized installer tools to avoid imperfections.
  5. Finishing touches to be sure that no imperfection  left.

“YYZ” is an instrumental rock composition by the Canadian rock band Rush from their 1981 album Moving Pictures. It is one of the band’s most popular pieces and was a staple of the band’s live performances. The song was played live on every tour since its release. The title “YYZ” is the IATA airport identification code of Toronto Pearson International Airport, near Rush’s hometown. The band was introduced to the rhythm as Alex Lifeson flew them into the airport. A VHF omnidirectional range system at the airport broadcasts the YYZ identifier code in Morse code. Peart said in interviews later that the rhythm stuck with them. The piece’s introduction, played in a time signature of 10/8, repeatedly renders “Y-Y-Z” in Morse Code using various musical arrangements. An official animated music video was released on YouTube on March 11, 2022 to coincide with the release of the 40th anniversary edition of Moving Pictures. The video contains elements from the parent album cover, and depicts a heist in Toronto. “YYZ” was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Rock Instrumental category in 1982. It’s a unique piece that not only showcases the band’s musical prowess but also pays homage to their hometown.

For the TOPMAN wall graphics installation at Yorkdale plaza, the project highlighted V. Creative Graphics’ expertise in delivering high-quality, durable wall graphics with Avery Dennison materials. Avery Dennison wall vinyl graphics were selected for this project due to their superior performance on various wall surfaces, ensuring that the graphics align with TOPMAN’s modern, sleek branding aesthetic.

The installation involved meticulous planning and alignment to maintain the consistency and sharpness of the brand’s look across the store interior. The team employed advanced tools to align and secure the vinyl graphics smoothly on the walls, ensuring longevity even in a high-traffic retail environment. The result was a visually impactful, durable installation that represented TOPMAN’s identity in a highly polished way.

Along with its women’s clothing counterpart Topshop and the rest of Arcadia Group, Topman went into administration in late 2020 with all high street stores subsequently closed and the brand was purchased by ASOS on February 1st/2021.

He loved to drink coffee. He felt there was a place for a company that would sell coffee the way he wanted to drink it.

Despite efforts to restructure, including rent relief and attempts to reposition the brand, Jean Machine could not compete with both low-end and high-end denim markets
